UPDATE
Provinces using investor-owned for-profit clinics to cut wait times heading towards predictable failure
Decades of austerity cuts, underfunding, and neglect by conservative governments have not left Canada’s healthcare system prepared for the pandemic’s sustained pressures. In response to a crumbling system, Canada’s right-wing establishment is prescribing more of the same failing treatment: private health care.
We’re seeing a new wave of pro-privatization discourse in the media as provinces move their privatization agendas forward. Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan have all announced plans to outsource surgeries to private providers - a strategy already in use by the B.C. NDP-led government to clear its surgical backlog.
In this month's blog post, we outline the evidence against private outsourcing and argue for a public sector strategy founded on proven solutions. READ MORE.

Tell your MP to end vaccine apartheid
The Council of Canadians and allies are calling for a people's lobby for global vaccine justice. Epidemiologists and public health experts have repeatedly warned that lack of vaccine access globally will lead to ongoing waves of COVID-19 variants. Trudeau's government could help improve vaccine access by supporting the temporary suspension of patents on vaccines. Instead, it has dragged its feet and succumbed to the interests of Big Pharma's pandemic profiteering.

It's time for a Safe Long-Term Care Act in Canada | Canadian Health Coalition
The BC Health Coalition joined partners across the country this month in calling on federal Health Minister Duclos to introduce legislation with national standards for long-term care that is funded, enforceable, and removes for-profit companies from long-term care. Read the letter here.
You can help reinforce the call for national standards that have accountability and enforcement built in. Until March 27, the Health Standard Organization is accepting comments on its draft national standards for long-term care. Please take a moment to let them know you expect legislated and enforceable standards.

It has pitted countries against each other in a zero-sum game, outbidding one another, stockpiling vaccines and, when it suits them, charitably donating leftovers."
Expert panel urges safer supply, evidence-based system of care to reduce deaths from illicit drugs | BC Coroners Service Experts convened by the BC Coroners Services is calling for increased access to a safer supply of drugs, after criticisms that B.C.'s 2022 budget provides little for alternatives to poisoned substances.
