Dear Friends of SJS,
Please consider joining us for a social justice discussion on poverty:
“It Happens Here Too” – Taking Action on Child Poverty in Our Community
For over ten years, BC’s child poverty rate was been one of the highest in Canada. Last year, BC had the worst child poverty rate in Canada – 1 in 5 children in BC live in poverty. We can no longer stand idly by and watch parents/guardians and their children struggling with inadequate incomes and supports to live healthy, dignified lives.
In response to this crisis in our communities, Christ Church Cathedral, UVIC Social Justice Studies, the Community Social Planning Council, and the Community Action Plan on Poverty are holding a community learning and action event on child poverty March 29th, 2014 at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria.
This day-long learning and action event will bring together community members, practitioners, organizers, activists, academics, and others to explore... how we can address child poverty in our community together.
When: Saturday, March 29th, 2014
Time: 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Where: Christ Church Cathedral, Quadra St. at Rockland Ave. Victoria BC
Please register by going on-line http://child-poverty-happens-here.eventbrite.ca/.
Morning session: Keynote Speaker will walk participants through how to use legal frameworks to alleviate and prevent child poverty in our communities.
Afternoon session: Forum speakers will walk us through what they and their organizations are doing to address child poverty in their communities.
Each session will include a chance for participants to discuss how they can be active in addressing child poverty in their communities.
This is a BY DONATION EVENT and everyone is welcome. Lunch will be provided.
Childcare subsidies and bus tickets are available on request.
Cosponsored by UVic Social Justice Studies, Community Social Planning Council, Christ Church Cathedral, Community Action Plan on Poverty
