There’s a climate-smart solution for high gas prices

We need transit everywhere

Hi Paov,

Summertime — wasn’t the living supposed to be easy? Somewhere in between flood season and fire season comes high gas price season.

With gas prices closing in on $2.50 a litre, many families are feeling the pain at the pump.

Thankfully, what’s arguably the best way to fight climate change is also the number one thing we can do to make life more affordable for British Columbians.

Let’s make it possible for more people to live without a vehicle.

Send my message! After housing, the family car is often the second largest expense for most households. Even electric vehicles are expensive and take up valuable space and resources. Plus try getting a hold of one these days! By making it possible and affordable for most people to walk, bike, roll or take transit, we can eliminate carbon pollution and make life in this pricey province a little more bearable.

We have to get over this idea that transit is only for people in urban centres. Growing communities like Abbotsford and Nanaimo desperately need the kind of frequent, reliable transit many of us take for granted. It’s also long past time to stop charging people based on the distance they’re moving — we want to encourage transit for longer trips!

Translink and BC Transit have all the long-term plans they need to get transit moving fast. But they need the funding to make it happen now. Of the nine bus rapid transit lines, Translink recently announced, only one will move forward immediately. Your leaders need to hear you want them to make an urgent roll-out of rapid, affordable transit a top priority.

Can you write your MLA and demand game-changing transit investments now? Write Now Removing the zone pricing and intercity fares would provide instant relief for distance drivers who opt for transit. Meanwhile, new electric buses should be quick and easy to get on the road as soon as the province can get its hands on some. Families — and the climate — need help now!
