Let's get the Sukunka coal mine shut down

Hi Paov,

You’ve been fighting for the caribou and we’ve had many amazing wins. Because of that, some herds are rebounding!

But we’ve got more work to do. Right now, both the federal and provincial governments are consulting the public on whether or not they should approve the Sukunka coal mine. Let’s put the final nail in its coffin!

Traditional knowledge and science both show this project could drive the Quintette herd from its last refuge and push the herd to extinction. At the same time, there’s no place in a climate crisis for a coal mine that would have a lifespan of 25 years or more.

The governments are taking comments for just this month. Let’s get this mine shut down.

Write your letter today! Former Saulteau chief Ken Cameron is one of the few people who has seen the decline of caribou in real time, “I saw with my own eyes the large herds that lived in the region we now call Quintette. The only way I can describe the size of those herds is to say that they were countless.”

“If this huge project were to proceed now before the Quintette herd has had a chance to recover, I can tell you that after a lifetime of observing these animals, they will be driven from their last refuge. The herd will likely be pushed to extinction.” Help scrap the project for good The Quintette herd is no stranger to the devastating impacts of coal mining. They declined from roughly 114 caribou in 2013 to 62 caribou in 2016 following the expansion of a coal mine in their core habitat. They were pushed from their habitat into low elevations where they experienced high levels of wolf predation.

We can’t let this happen again.
