Taking on Kinder Morgan – in hearings or in the streets

People's Procession Poster

Hi PAOV,

The push to develop Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline took another step forward this week when the National Energy Board (NEB) announced the list of people allowed to participate in upcoming review hearings.

More than 2,000 individuals and groups signed up to voice their opinions about this controversial pipeline and tanker proposal. But almost half of those who applied were denied the type of participation they were hoping for. Hundreds of concerned citizens have been shut out of the process completely, and hundreds more were “downgraded” by the NEB so that they may only write a letter of comment instead of speaking at the hearings. For more details, check out this blog post.

I’m proud to be representing the Wilderness Committee as an intervenor in the hearings, and I’ll be using this opportunity to voice concerns on behalf of those who are being excluded. However, we’ve seen what’s happened in assessments for other tar sands pipelines – like Northern Gateway – and we know that in Canada, these review processes have been severely weakened.

If you’re one of the many people who have been denied a chance to speak out against Kinder Morgan in the hearings (or even if you've been approved), there’s another important opportunity for you to raise your voice – and it’s just around the corner.

Next Saturday, April 12th, join us in Burnaby for the People’s Procession & Rally against the Pipelines.

Organized by Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion (BROKE), this family-friendly event will bring together citizens, First Nations, environmental and community groups to raise awareness and show opposition to this risky proposal.

The procession begins at 10:00 am with an opening ceremony in Burnaby’s Forest Grove Park, and then follows the existing Kinder Morgan pipeline route to Westridge Park where a large rally will take place at 1:00 pm. From there the procession will continue on to Kinder Morgan’s Westridge Marine Terminal, where a flotilla of boats, canoes and kayaks (coordinated by North Shore NOPE) will be launching on the Burrard Inlet.

I’ll be there to represent the Wilderness Committee, and I’d love to see you there too!

The federal government and companies like Kinder Morgan are making it more and more difficult for Canadians to engage in the decision-making when it comes to tar sands pipelines and industrial development. But we aren’t going to let that stop us from showing our opposition.

Let’s make the most of this great opportunity to get out on the streets and stand up for the coast and for the climate!

Cheers,
