Dear Paov,
Did you know that the term “carbon footprint” was first promoted and popularized in an ad campaign run by the oil giant BP?
The “personal carbon footprint” concept is usually used as a way to measure an individual’s actions to reduce climate impact – and Big Oil is trying to escape accountability by pushing this responsibility onto you. PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT X2 By blaming individual consumers for causing the climate crisis, fossil fuel companies can deflect their own responsibility through marketing that capitalizes on our climate guilt – a shift that internal Shell communications agreed was “gaslighting” the public.
Individuals alone cannot solve this crisis. It needs to be a collective effort. And that’s why we launched our Sue Big Oil campaign – to tackle climate change at its root (the huge profits made by fossil fuels), while seeking compensation from major polluters to keep our communities safe from climate impacts.
Today, on #GivingTuesday, a generous West Coast supporter has agreed to match any donation you make to help us Sue Big Oil – but only until midnight PST. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in total by the end of the day. Will you join us and make this happen?
DOUBLE MY GIFT BEFORE MIDNIGHT
For decades, Big Oil has been profiting from polluting the planet, and shifting the blame onto others. Their efforts to delay action on climate change is leaving taxpayers, local governments and our communities to cover skyrocketing costs that we can’t afford. Your donation today will be doubled – dollar-for-dollar – for up to $5,000. This support will allow us to: - Collaborate with climate activists and community members all over BC to build support for a class action lawsuit against some of the world's largest polluters;
- Put climate litigation on the agenda at local government councils across the province;
- Work with BC communities to better understand how climate change is affecting them, and the related financial costs;
- And continue pursuing other legal solutions to protect the climate, nature and communities.
Sincerely,
The Team at West Coast Environmental Law
P.S. – We know that #GivingTuesday can be an overwhelming day with so many other worthwhile causes to support. If we don’t hear back from you soon, we’ll send you another reminder in your inbox later today so that you don’t miss out on the chance to leave twice the impact for our planet. We’re raising $10,000 before midnight PST and we need your help.
We recognize that our readers are diverse and have unique experiences. Due to the impacts of systemic racism and colonialism, or a variety of other factors affecting financial well-being, some readers may not be able or inclined to make a monetary gift. We welcome your ongoing support and engagement with West Coast in whatever form you choose.
