Recent legal wins to celebrate World Wildlife Day today

r1 Happy World Wildlife Day! ... DONATE NOW
Hey Paov,

Today is World Wildlife Day – a day to celebrate all the animals, plants and other species we share our planet with!

Wildlife is vital for ecosystem relationships, cultural connections, livelihoods and food security. At West Coast Environmental Law, we ensure wildlife and their habitats thrive and enrich the lives of all British Columbians, by protecting them through law.

In this spirit, we’re focusing on some of our recent wins for wildlife here at West Coast Environmental Law. These wins would not have been possible without our lawyers, advocates and supporters like you.

At the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) hosted in December 2022, our team was on the ground in Montreal advocating for bold commitments, including:
  • Advancing ocean protection
  • Amplifying Indigenous-led visions of nature protection to be included in the new global biodiversity framework
  • Supporting Indigenous-led conservation initiatives
  • Holding BC accountable to the promise of biodiversity legislation
  • Ensuring the federal government helps us meet our biodiversity goals
The conference ended with the signing of an international agreement committing to protect 30% of the planet’s land and water by 2030 – a key step for preserving wildlife habitat in Canada and abroad. In 2023, we will continue holding decision-makers accountable for their commitments to ensure that big promises to safeguard nature are backed by law.

Building upon the momentum from COP15, our marine lawyers came together last month for the 5th International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) hosted in Vancouver. Establishing marine protected areas (MPAs) is one of the most effective ways to safeguard ocean wildlife. And IMPAC5 marked a major milestone in our work supporting the new Great Bear Sea MPA Network, which will help protect:
  • Salmon
  • Herring
  • Humpback whales
  • Orcas
  • Seabirds
  • As well as bears, wolves, and more
These and other species are integral to the ecosystems we all rely on, providing sustenance, cultural and economic benefits. Read more on our work to protect wildlife beneath the waves in our key takeaways from IMPAC5.
