Dear Paov --
I want to share some good news. This morning the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Cambie Surgeries Corporation’s leave for appeal. This means that more than a decades-long legal attack by Cambie Surgeries and its CEO, Brian Day, on our public health care system has come to an end. You can read our Press Release here and view the Supreme Court decision here.
The Supreme Court’s dismissal upholds the BC Supreme Court and BC Court of Appeal judgements protecting public health care. The BC Supreme Court found that the evidence before the court showed that a duplicative private health care system would increase wait times in the public system and cause harm to all who depend on it. The BC Court of Appeal also agreed with the BC Supreme Court’s finding that a private duplicative health care system would result in longer wait times for the vast majority of us who rely on the public health care system.
This legal attack on our publicly-funded health care system has finally come to an end. That being said, the work to strengthen and... improve our health care system is far from over. We will continue to call for the implementation of evidence-based public solutions that are proven to reduce wait times and improve quality of care.
At the same time, we intend to continue championing a publicly-funded health care system that is there for everyone when they need it in the face of encroaching for-profit interests in our health care system.
We will be following up in the next week or so with a deep dive into the history of the Cambie case and where we plan to go from here.
We are grateful to all the people who have worked tirelessly for more than a decade to get us to this point, and that includes you. Your support and financial contributions have been key to winning this fight. We hope that you will join us in continuing to advocate for solutions that strengthen our shared public health care system.
In solidarity,
