Spotted owl fight takes us to court, again! r1 ...

Together, we can save the spotted owl
from extinction in Canada!

Hi Paov,

We've had enough.

Despite our decades-long campaign to ensure the northern spotted owl survives and recovers to healthy numbers, the governments have other ideas.

The federal government has refused to take concrete actions despite the fact that one spotted owl remains in the wild. The BC government continues to allow logging in habitat critical for the owl’s recovery. The last owl resides in the Spô’zêm First Nation territory in the southwest region of the province.

That's why we've launched a legal action demanding Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, intervene to save the species.

Help us win this fight!

What’s the latest?

Guilbeault is legally obligated to recommend an emergency order to cabinet if he forms an opinion that there is an imminent threat to the survival or recovery of a species at risk — which he did and communicated to us officially back in February. Shockingly, despite acknowledging the imminent threats faced by the spotted owl, he has failed to act. And since that time, two captive-bred owls that were released into the wild have died, leaving one remaining owl.

Even worse, logging approved by the BC government has begun in the 2,500 hectares of spotted owl habitat, identified by the minister as necessary for the species' recovery. If this continues, the spotted owl will disappear from Canada forever.

Why your donation is more important than ever

  • Forceful Legal Action: Represented by environmental law organization Ecojustice, we've filed a suit to ensure the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault complies with the law. With your contribution, we can continue to supply our lawyers with updated maps and on-the-ground footage of ongoing logging destruction so this compelling legal challenge means action to protect the spotted owl's habitat. Your donation directly supports the legal expertise, research and resources needed to hold the government accountable.
  • Impact and Change: Help us continue our work to ensure Guilbeault and the federal cabinet take urgent measures to stop the current logging and safeguard the spotted owl's habitat. All of the scientifically-identified critical habitat needs protection to recover the species. Your support strengthens our voice, amplifying the urgency of the situation and making it impossible to ignore.
  • Saving Species: The spotted owl is on the brink of extinction in Canada. But it’s not the only one. Your donation will directly contribute to the preservation of this magnificent creature and its old-growth habitat that is home to so many other at-risk species as well. In addition, it will set a precedent to ensure the Federal Species at Risk Act is used as it is intended — to protect at-risk species. By supporting our legal action, you are playing a crucial role in securing a future for the spotted owl and other at-risk species in this country. Your contribution has the power to turn the tide.
  • A Chance for Recovery: Canadian Wildlife Service scientists believe that with the right actions, the spotted owl's recovery is still possible. The captive-breeding facility in BC continues to support spotted owls, with a current population of about 30, and there are several thousand owls in the wild in the US. By taking legal action and compelling the government to fulfill its obligations, we can create the necessary conditions for the species to thrive once again.
Support us! Your donation, no matter the size, will fund our work as an environmental watchdog in this legal battle and beyond. We won’t stop until the owl’s habitat and all remaining old-growth in this province are protected — for good.

For the wild,
