Cut the CRAPP: The Truth about Tar Sands

CRAPP Graphic

Hello PAOV,

Have you been to the movies lately? If you have, it’s possible that you’ve been subjected to the same oil industry ads that I saw last time I visited the theatre.

Before the film began, this advertisement from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) attempted to convince me that the Alberta tar sands were something to be proud of – a true Canadian enterprise.

In reality, digging up vast stretches of the boreal forest for one of the dirtiest fossil fuels in the world is something that's opposed by a growing number of Canadians. And contrary to popular belief, the tar sands industry is not all that important to our economy.

What is important to Canadians is reclaiming our position as a leader in the fight against climate change. On that front, our federal government has abandoned us. They have fired scientists, reversed environmental protection laws and turned their backs on international efforts to reduce climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions.

Our government has rebranded us as the world’s climate laggard without our permission.

All these changes didn’t come out of nowhere. Behind this shift there is a big-spending, unrelenting oil lobby, which has successfully pushed for weakened environmental laws in Canada. Industry groups like CAPP have also invested hugely in media and ad campaigns designed to hide the ugly truth about the tar sands.

It’s time to set the record straight. We need your help to spread the word about our new CRAPP initiative, so that we can inject some much-needed reality into the conversation around the tar sands.

Please pass this message along to your friends and family, check out www.CRAPP.ca and share the graphic on Facebook!

Canadians need to know the truth about the tar sands and the impact this industry is having on our lands and waters, our international reputation and our climate. Let’s get the word out!

Cheers,
