The BC NDP is still failing to protect irreplaceable forests
Hi Paov,
Three years ago today, I sent an email to our supporters full of hope for old-growth forests.
After years of insisting all was well in the woods, the BC government finally admitted there was a problem, releasing "A New Future For Old Forests." This report was the result of the Old Growth Strategic Review (OGSR), the largest independent assessment of forest policy in BC history. The report called status quo logging unsustainable and recommended a paradigm shift in the forests.
For First Nations, communities and organizations like the Wilderness Committee who’ve been fighting for old-growth forests for decades, this report was a vindication. A lot of work was needed, but the government finally made the commitments we needed it to.
In the three years since, the BC NDP hasn’t lived up to its word.

The OGSR made 14 recommendations and laid out a three-year timeline to achieve them. That deadline is now passed and not one of the recommendations is completed — many have not even been started. The province has announced some temporary holds on logging and more goals to protect ancient forests. But they’ve yet to commit the funding required to meaningfully stop logging in threatened old-growth.
Today, we’re calling out Premier David Eby and the BC NDP for their continued “talk and log” policies.
And then, we’re going to pull together a distributed day of action to turn up the heat.
Will you join us for the Day of Action for Old-Growth Forests on Sept. 28?
We’re aiming to have as many actions in as many ridings as possible to put MLAs on notice that we haven’t forgotten about their promises. We need all of you to help make this a big and impactful day.
It takes a movement to protect old-growth rainforests
We’ve spent the past three years mobilizing people to put pressure on the BC NDP government and hold them accountable on their old-growth promises. Tens of thousands of you have written letters, met with your MLA’s, attended rallies and demonstrations. And most of all, you’ve helped us get out into the woods to document what’s happening on the land.
We’re working with allies to clear the record on what the provincial government says it’s done on old-growth versus what’s actually happening.
The BC Legislature sits again in October — let’s send lawmakers back with a clear message that it's time to stop dragging their heels, stand up to the logging industry, and keep their promises to protect ancient forests.
The only thing that will force the BC government to do the right thing is us.
For the old-growth,
