Town Hall Report-back: Sticking up for public health care

Many thanks to the amazing panelists and moderator who participated in our town hall! From left to right: Dr. Kelvin Bei, Leslie Gaudette, Lisa Akinyi May, Nikolas Barry-Shaw, Dr. Lindsay Hedden, Dr. Rita McCracken, and Ronnie Nicolarosa.

On November 20, the BC Health Coalition held the Sticking Up For Public Health Care Townhall. We gathered with health care workers, patients, seniors, researchers, and the public for a deep-dive into the cautionary tales about privatization and the public solutions that will save our health care system.

The event was co-sponsored by our partners at Canadian Doctors for Medicare and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives BC Office. It featured panelists from the Council... of Canadians, the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC, Simon Fraser University, Rise Community Health Centre, the University of British Columbia, and the Hospital Employees Union. These panelists represented health care researchers, front-line health care workers, seniors, and health care advocates.

ACTION

Write a letter to the Canadian Medical Association in support of public health care

On November 23rd, a delegation of BC Health Coalition members attended The Globe and Mail's "Public-Private Health Care" Vancouver Town Hall. The event, sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association, is part of a cross-country series spreading a misleading narrative about the "right balance" of private health care. Our delegation sported I stick up for public health care stickers, presented evidence in question periods, distributed flyers about privatization myths and public solutions, and hosted a press conference following the event.

Join us in letting the Canadian Medical Association know your concerns about their role in normalizing health care privatization. We've created an easy-to-use letter-writing tool with a template letter to make it easy for you to contact the CMA's leadership. We need medical leaders who are well-versed in the evidence about the risks of profit-driven care. Click here to call on the CMA to use their influence to advance public solutions instead.

Campaign Call for long-term care funding reform

Over 200 people & organizations representing thousands of seniors, their families, and workers joined our virtual Campaign Call on October 31 to show their public support for funding reform in long-term care. Click here to watch the recording.

We were grateful to hear from BC Seniors Advocate, Isobel Mackenzie on her latest report reviewing long-term care. Her report shows that for-profit long-term care operators are making record profits while under-delivering care hours at alarming rates, and British Columbians – whether residents, family members of residents, or workers in long-term care homes - are paying for it.

Over 2000 of our supporters have signed up to send Minister of Health Adrian Dix a postcard showing our support for funding reform in long-term care. If you are participating, you can expect a postcard in the mail and instructions on next steps soon!
