Biodiversity needs legal protection
Hi Paov,
There are three weeks left in the BC government’s consultation process for their new biodiversity and ecosystem health framework, and we have to make sure it’s done right!
Imagine an endangered caribou herd finally receiving protection to prevent mining operations within their caribou calving grounds! This is what we are fighting for.
The BC government has been promising a biodiversity law for over three years. Now, this promise is finally taking shape with the biodiversity framework. This is our chance. Let’s bring this crucial law into reality and make it good.
It’s not just getting a law that’s important; it’s ensuring that it’s strong and effective with legal teeth. It must:
- Prioritize ecosystems and biodiversity above resource extraction,
- Be co-developed with First Nations,
- Protect species at risk and their habitat, and
- Build equity into the law to reward communities and people who protect biodiversity
We can change the tide for species and ecosystems, and it starts with creating the legal framework to do so!
For the caribou, spotted owls, marbled murrelets, specklebelly lichen and everything in between,
