Scrub fossil fuel fingerprints from Canada’s oil and gas emissions cap
Hi Paov,
For over ten years, we’ve fought to put a lid on rising emissions from oil and gas — Canada’s most polluting sector.
Now’s our best chance to rein in pollution from the fossil fuel industry. Will you take it?
Late last year, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault announced he would place a cap on oil and gas emissions. But the framework he released is full of loopholes and doesn’t require the industry to do its fair share.
Fossil fuel lobbyists are asking for “flexibility” in the cap, which could let companies pay to cover 20 per cent of their obligations. This is despite the federal government already requiring them to do five to 10 per cent less than other businesses in Canada.
If we get this right, the oil and gas emissions cap could finally... do what the climate movement has been working towards for decades — reverse the out of control growth of pollution from the fossil fuel industry. But without your voice these companies could still get their way.
We’ve got until Feb. 5 to send as many letters as we can and convince the federal government to close the loopholes and deliver a strong emissions cap as soon as possible. Pro-pollution groups are getting oil and gas supporters to weigh in and we have to be louder.
With your help, we’ll finally stop the oil and gas industry from undoing all the good work you and I are doing to limit our climate impact.
For the climate,
