Tell B.C. to follow through on a biodiversity law
Hi Paov,
At the end of January, the B.C. government wrapped up the public engagement process for its draft Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Framework. This draft framework references a new biodiversity law to be co-developed with First Nations, and sets ecosystem health and biodiversity standards for all sectors to adhere to. Imagine finally holding industry to a standard when it comes to biodiversity protection!
However, it fails to commit to a strong timeline for implementing the law.
Over the past 10... years, thousands of you called for a new law to protect species and put into place strong interim measures to protect their habitat in the meantime — thanks for raising your voice!
But we’re not done. We need to ensure Premier David Eby and Minister of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship Nathan Cullen, do not back away from implementing a strong law for biodiversity protection.
In the past, we’ve seen the government take steps towards protecting species only to back away in the face of lobbying by logging, mining and oil and gas corporations. To set things right this time, as many of us as possible need to remind them honouring their commitment to biodiversity requires a law co-developed with Indigenous titleholders, a timeline for its implementation and immediate interim measures to prevent the destruction of habitat in the meantime.
Let’s encourage Minister Cullen and Premier Eby to do the right thing for the wildlife we all cherish.
Anything other than a new law will continue to allow species to fall through the legal gaps toward extinction. The province is expected to announce its intentions and next steps sometime this spring — let’s keep the pressure on!
