Proponent’s climate claims not backed by evidence

Hi Paov,

For over a decade, proponents of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have made the same tired claim: that it will replace coal in Asia and, therefore, be beneficial for the global climate. We’ve poked more holes in this argument than a woodpecker does in a lifetime, but it just won’t die.

Thankfully, the... Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs from northwestern B.C. didn’t buy the industry’s spin. They hired their own experts to do an assessment of the Ksi Lisims LNG project’s climate impacts. But the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) is charging ahead anyway despite the chiefs' request to halt the review.

Can you support Gitanyow’s call?

Gitanyow neighbours the Nisga’a Nation, who have partnered with a consortium of fracking companies and an LNG outfit from Texas to build Ksi Lisims LNG — a floating LNG export facility on their treaty land.

But the plant would impact Gitanyow fisheries on the Nass River and intensify droughts, wildfires and the loss of glaciers on their territory.

Please write to the BCEAO supporting the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs’ calls for a proper accounting of the project’s greenhouse gas emissions.

SUPPORT THE GITANYOW

Ksi Lisims LNG would be almost as big as LNG Canada, the LNG export terminal under construction in Kitimat right now that will single handedly prevent B.C. from meeting its 2025 climate commitments.

Let’s show our solidarity with Indigenous leaders who understand that more fossil fuels will only worsen the climate disasters wreaking havoc on their territories.

For the climate,

Peter McCartney
