Welcome BC’s new Health Minister, Josie Osborne

We have a new Health Minister in British Columbia: Josie Osborne, who was first elected as MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim in 2020. In her first interview since taking on the file, she pledged to fix emergency room closures in rural communities. We’ve heard from some of BCHC’s rural members and they are excited to have Osborne take on the role as Health Minister – she has spoken out to support more rural access to primary care throughout her previous term.

We are finailizing a letter to our new health Minister to congratulate her on her... new appointment and to begin dialogue to push for our six solutions to heal public health care in BC. We will keep our members updated when the Health Ministry responds.

Also, welcome BC Health Coalition’s newest staff, Angus

Angus joined the BC Health Coalition right before the Provincial election as the Director of Operations to cover Usman Mushtaq’s leave. Previous to joining BCHC, Angus spent a decade fighting corporate power and running anti-privatization campaigns at an international non-profit organization. Angus has been a supporter of the BC Health Coalition since 2016 when Brian Day filed his dangerous case against the Province of British Columbia – he helped deliver a petition with tens of thousands of signatures to Cambie Surgery Center on the first day of the court case.

Move in week at new hospital. Fourteen years after a letter was sent from regional health care officials to B.C. Liberal health minister Kevin Falcon asking for a replacement to the aging and inadequate Mills Memorial Hospital, it is move-in week at that replacement, Ksyen Regional Hospital in Terrace BC.

Nurses lead the way: CNA’s Hill Day advocates for solutions to Canada’s health-care crisis. The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is hosting its annual Hill Day today, bringing the voice of nurses directly to Parliament to drive impactful health policy changes for Canadians.

Where is it? Health Coalition wants government to release Canada Health Act interpretation letter. Canadians desperate for access to primary care have increasingly turned to virtual care and nurse practitioners as the way to access health care.

BC Health Coalition in the News

Kelowna medical clinic’s paid memberships could be a ‘legal grey zone’. Audrey Guay with the BC Health Coalition, an organization that advocates for the public healthcare system, said although clinics are legally allowed to sell memberships for services outside of the medical services plan, people may be paying for services they are freely entitled to.
