End of Plan and New Beginnings

NationBuilder r1

Hi Paov.

“Wow.” That is the reaction my new colleague Cheryl had as she learned all that the BC Health Coalition has done in the past two years to advocate for public health care.

And as a new(ish) staff member to the Coalition, I agree – from ending the Brian Day Case to being on the front page of the Times Colonist the day before the Provincial election, it's amazing what we as a coalition can accomplish.

As we close the year here at the Health Coalition – we are also reflecting on our 2023 - 2024 strategic plan, so we can apply the learnings as we develop our 2025 - 2026 plan early next year. But before closing the chapter on this latest plan – we wanted to highlight all you helped accomplish in the last two years. And ask for your support as we plan for the two years ahead.

Victory on Cambie Case

On April 6, 2023, the Supreme... Court of Canada dismissed Cambie Surgeries Corporation’s leave for appeal. This means that the 14 year-long legal attack by Cambie Surgeries on our public health care system has come to an end.

The legal attack, led by the CEO of Cambie Surgeries Brian Day, aimed to dismantle key protections in the BC Medicare Protection Act that guarantee access based on need and not the ability to pay. Losing this case would have had national impact as those same protections are enshrined in the Canada Health Act. Through the actions and support of our members over 14 years, we were finally able to win this case!

But as the Cambie case ended, so have some of the donations supporting our anti-privatization work. We believe that fighting back against the privatization of our health care system should be front and center in our next strategic plan – will you chip in so we can continue the important work of keeping our health care public?

Front page news and TV coverage

One of the key goals of our previous strategic plan was to be a strong voice advocating for public health care.

And we smashed that goal. We appeared on camera from CTV to Global, were quoted on the CBC, and were guests on CKNW radio to champion our health care system.

We were even front page news – the day before the Provincial election, we were front page news in the Times Colonist.

We want to continue being a strong voice in the media to speak for a robust health care system. And our plan is to train up more voices across the province to speak up for public health. Will you chip in to help us fund this important work?

Province-wide Health Coalition

Everyone in our province has the right to health care. But for people living in more remote communities, access to health care services is even more difficult due to the lack of facilities, staff, and the need to travel.

One of the goals of our previous strategic plan was to center the voices of people living outside of Vancouver and Victoria and hear their experience accessing health care.

And we made some progress – we attended the Rural Voices Gathering, we held events in Nanaimo, Vernon and Kamloops, and we built a stronger relationship with the BC Rural Health Network, who recently joined our steering committee.

We want to continue to connect with people living outside of Vancouver and Victoria in our next two-year strategic plan. But our province is massive, and travel costs continue to rise. Will you help chip in to help us connect with our more rural partners?

We are so very excited about the future of the BC Health Coalition. Please consider supporting our work to protect our health care from corporate interests, advocate for public health care in the media, and have a provincial health coalition that is truly province-wide.

Sincerely,

Angus
