[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for week of May 20th

NEWS

The Witness Blanket, an art installation created by Kwagiulth artist and Master Carver Carey Newman (Ha-yalth-kingeme) and inspired by the traditional woven blanket as a symbol of protection and comfort, evokes the atrocities of Indian Residential Schools and a national journey toward reconciliation. On May 20, the blanket will be presented for the first time during opening ceremonies for CUVic 2014: Beyond Engagement, a global three-day conference hosted by UVic to highlight the innovative experiences of universities and communities working together.

With the annual Bike To Work Week happening next week (see Events below), we are more conscious of all the wonderful reasons why we should try cycling to work and school. The Washington Post recently published an article on how America could solve two of its most pressing problems – obesity and climate change – if urban areas were designed... so people could get back on their bikes! (sounds pretty simple, eh?) Or try reading one of these great books, 50 Ways the New Bike Culture Can Change Your Life or Why I Ride: Because a Bike Pedal Lasts Longer Than a Gas Tank.

Lots of climate change news in the conventional media last week with news that ice sheets in the Western Antarctic are melting much faster than previously predicted which will lead to accelerating sea level rise. The Times Colonist story includes quotes from various UVic researchers studying different aspects of climate change. Also last week the American government published its National Climate Assessment with news for the Pacific Northwest which has implications for southwestern BC as well. The Globe & Mail reported that the news is consistent with previous reports published by the UN IPCC and UVic’s Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium.
