[evoz] August 7

Dear friends of peace in Victoria,

You are invited to Victoria Women in Black silent vigil on Thursday, August 7, noon- 1pm; in remembrance of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki we call for nuclear disarmament.

PLEASE JOIN OUR VIGIL FOR AL OR PART OF THE ONE HOUR – we are seen by hundreds of locals and tourists and we pass out our information leaflet. FOR THIS VIGIL WE GATHER BELOW THE TOURIST OFFICE ON GOVERNMENT –across from the Empress Hotel. Supportive men are welcome. Lots of benches to rest on.

Nine nations today have 19,000 nuclear weapons. Three of these nations are involved in conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine.

Some of the weapons contain uranium mined and exported... from Canada. Canada was the world's largest uranium producer for many years, accounting for about 22% of world output, but in 2009 was overtaken by Kazakhstan. It comes mainly from the McArthur River mine in northern Saskatchewan, which is the largest in the world. Production is expected to increase significantly from 2014 as the new Cigar Lake mine comes into operation. Canada produced the uranium used in the ‘small bombs’ dropped on Japan in 1945.

The power and ‘right’ to destroy all life on earth is in the hands of a few people who do not represent us or most of the world’s population. This assumed right to destroy is exercised in many conflicts, invasions, wars and threats of war by nuclear nations. ‘Conventional warfare’ is backed by the unspoken possibility of using nuclear weapons, Please be part of our witness for peace and disarmament and pass this message on. Terry Wolfwood
