Salish Sea Summer Gathering 2013

Hello PAOV,

It’s that time of year again when we head for North Vancouver for a celebration on the shores of the Salish Sea. We have been invited by the good folks at Tsleil-Waututh Nation Sacred Trust to their annual Salish Sea Summer Gathering. This Sunday, August 10th, we’ll get together to celebrate our precious shared waters, and combine our voices in solidarity! Music and dance is a wonderful way to fire up the soul and keep the fighting spirit alive.

And we have a lot to fight for. Right now, more than 20 new or expanded oil, coal or LNG facilities are proposed on the shores of the Salish Sea, primarily aimed at exporting North American fossil fuels to Asian markets. If all the proposals were approved, the Pacific Northwest would become one of the largest fossil fuel exporters in the world.

I don’t know about you, but I am not about to stand by and watch that happen.

Celebrations like the Salish Sea Summer Gathering are really important for me, because they give me the chance to interact with all the wonderful people who are stepping up to demand climate action in this part of the world. When I look around at the committed folks who come to this event every year, it confirms what I try to always remember: we can stop the fossil fuel industry in its tracks!
