NEWS

The David Suzuki Foundation has recently posted a series of compelling images, research and in-person interviews focused on the evolution in environmental thinking, and the current state of Canadians’ rights to a healthy life and environment. The series, called Broken Ground, represents the launch of a multi-year campaign. See the website for more info.

UVic Anthropology professor Brian Thom is featured in the Globe and Mail for his work with the Stz'uminus First Nation on Vancouver Island’s east coast. The project integrates indigenous oral history within a Google Maps application, helping to connect aboriginal youth to their traditional history and language, and may assist in securing a long-sought land treaty.

In their article about recent findings on the BC Carbon Tax by Stats Canada, this Globe and Mail... article calls attention to strength of numbers to prove the effectiveness of taxing carbon: in the last 6 years since BC has implemented the tax, fuel use has decreased by 16%, while it has increased in the rest of the Country by 3%. It’s a compelling argument to suggest that the BC Carbon Tax should serve as a model throughout Canada, and the world. What remains to be seen, however, is how the Carbon Tax can be expanded to account for its shortcomings, such as the fact that fossil fuels produced in BC and exported and burned elsewhere aren’t included in the calculations. An important conversation to take part in, especially given BC’s growing shale gas industry.

The Capital Region Food and Agriculture Initiative Roundtable (CRFAIR) is seeking a more catchy namesake, and they are asking for suggestions from the community. CRFAIR is a roundtable made up of 25 organizations who share a vision of a region where local, sustainable and healthy food is celebrated and abundant.
