Support Fossil Fuel Resistance - Join us for the Lummi Totem Pole Journey!

Hi PAOV,
A First Nations’ group from Washington State is touring the North West with an 18-foot totem pole, and next weekend they’re coming to Vancouver Island!
The totem, carved by master carver Jewell James of the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation, is to oppose the dangerous transport of tarsands oil and coal through the Salish Sea region. Mr. James and the Lummi Nation are travelling over 10,000 kilometers in three weeks with the totem.
Join local First Nations, the Wilderness Committee, and other environmental groups in welcoming the tour to Vancouver Island!
When: 2:00 pm Saturday, August 30th
Where: Songhees Wellness Centre, 1100 Admirals Rd (Esquimalt)
What: Ceremony, speeches, local blessings.
See the Facebook event
The eyes of the fossil fuel industry are locked on the Salish Sea, and tarsands, coal, and LNG export proposals threaten to turn this waterway into a global carbon corridor, a highway to climate change.
More and more, we’re seeing people stand up to these reckless proposals, saying ‘No’ to more tankers and ‘Yes’ to better alternatives. Much of this opposition is led by First Nations – up and down the coast, indigenous peoples are speaking up in defence of their lands and waters and fighting for a brighter future for all of us.
The Lummi Totem Pole Journey, entitled Our Shared Responsibility, is one such effort, and we’re proud to be an organizer of the local stop here on the Island.
Next Saturday is sure to be a unique and powerful event – I hope to see you there!
