[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for week of Sept 2nd

NEWS

UVic’s new transit exchange opens today with the addition of 10 new bus bays and increased service for some routes including the Number 4, Number 12 and Number 39. Late night bus service on Friday and Saturday nights has been added to the Numbers 15x, 27, 28, and 50, in addition to the 4, 6 and 14. All of the downtown buses (4, 7, 11, 14 & 15x) are now conveniently clustered in the old exchange and all other buses (12, 13, 16x, 26, 39, 51 & 76x) are in the new exchange. The area also includes new covered bus shelters, covered bike parking and rain gardens.

Last week UVic hosted a 4-day an Indigenous Mapping Workshop attended by members from more than 70 First Nations from across Canada and outreach staff from Google Earth. Organized by the Firelight Group, the goal was to... teach people how to use the latest in digital mapping technology to chart their traditional territories for use in many applications including land claim negotiations, to track environmental changes and cultural heritage. See CBC website for more details.

There is some encouraging news regarding Canadian climate change policy, seriously lacking of late, with news that the Premiers of our various provinces and territories have come to an agreement that issues related to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and growing Canada clean-energy sector, should be at the forefront of an updated set of principles intended to guide work on a Canadian energy strategy. Led by the Premiers of Ontario and Quebec, this is considered to significant step forward. See Globe and Mail for more details.

Speaking of climate change, leaked information from the upcoming UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change synthesis report paints an unsettling and increasingly grim picture of our collective failure to fight the war against carbon pollution. The major theme is that any attempts to reverse the damage already done are going to be VERY difficult, and even if we were able to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions today, it will not stop the effects of the carbon already trapped in the atmosphere from melting the Arctic, rising sea levels and extreme weather events. See Grist for details.
