[Uvic-sustainability] CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY WEEK IS ALMOST HERE!

Hi all –

A reminder that UVic’s first Campus Sustainability Week is next week (Oct 6 to 10) with lots and lots of ways to learn more about campus and community sustainability, get involved, win prizes and have some fun! See below for all the details:

EVENTS - ALL WEEK

RANDOM ACTS OF COFFEE

Watch for volunteers giving out free coffee/tea coupons to those using their own resusable mugs. All food outlets on campus offer a discount on coffee or tea when you use your own mug. Bring your own mug, save a tree and save some cash!

DON’T SMASH YOUR PUMPKIN

Did you know that riding with helmets and lights is the law in BC? Ride safe this fall and pick up a helmet and lights at 25% all week at SUBtext.... See poster for more info.

EVENTS – BY DAY

Monday, OCT 6th:

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM WITH DAVID SUZUKI

An online Virtual Classroom presentation with David Suzuki, along with 100-Mile Diet co-author J.B. MacKinnon and food justice expert Utcha Sawyers beginning at 12 pm EST (9 am local time). It will be live streamed to post-secondary institutions and senior high school students across Canada. The UVic event will be hosted by the UVic Students' Society in Cinecenta in SUB from 9 am to 10 am. Admission is by donation to raise funds for Canadian Political Science Students Association conference on Energy and Environment (Calgary 2015).

“COULD BC BECOME A 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY REGION?”

Public talk featuring Guy Dauncey from the BC Sustainable Energy Association and UVic researchers Dr. Andrew Rowe and Sahand Behboodi from UVic Mechanical Engineering on technical, social and political ways BC could end it’s addiction to fossil fuels and become 100% renewable. Moderated by Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver. 7 to 9 PM, HHB 105. See the poster for more info.

Tuesday, OCT 7th:

LOVE-A-MUG

Free pizza and a photo with coffee cup mascot “Muggo” for anyone sporting their own reusable mug, at The Fountain, Noon to 2 PM. Photos will be posted to Facebook and Instagram.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY GARDEN TOUR AND FALL HARVEST

Wednesday, OCT 8th:

BIKE TO CAMPUS DAY

Events include a morning celebration station with free coffee, breakfast treats and quick repairs, at the Fountain, 7:30 to 9:30 AM, noon hour Cycling Skills Seminar in SUB with free pizza and a chance to win a new bike, a bike gear sale in front of the library, bike repairs by donation in the Quad. Also, a guided Campus Community Cruise with SPOKES from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, leaving from the Campus Bike Centre. See poster for more info.

CUNNINGHAM WOODS RESTORATION

Join other volunteers to help keep our campus beautiful and learn the basics of restoration with an ivy pull in Cunningham Woods. Workpartys at 10 AM and 2 PM. UVIC NATURE DAY

3RD annual UVic Nature Day. Events from 3:30 to 9 PM include outdoor yoga, workshops, potluck dinner and documentary film. See Facebook for more info.

DO IT IN THE DARK: OPEN MIC NIGHT

Do you like live music? Do you like performing onstage? If so, UVic Residence Life and Education will be hosting the second annual "Do It in The Dark" Open Mic Night in Vertigo in SUB from 7:00-9:00pm! Group and individual sets are welcome. EARTHFEST

Hosted by the student led UVic Sustainability Project, a day of speakers, workshops, food music and other special events including the ECOSPEAK contest and Sustainability Photo Contest winners announcement, and a Skype discussion with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May from Ottawa, in SUB, Noon to 8:30 PM. DODGE IN THE DARK: HERE WE GLOW AGAIN

Try your skills on the court in the dark complete with a DJ, glow tape, glow in the dark balls and lasers. Chance to win prizes too. Hosted by Vikes Nation, Ian Stewart Complex Gym, 5 to 8 PM. See Facebook for more info.

URBAN FARMS

Public talk by local urban farmers who design and manage their farms to benefit the local environment as well as grow food. Hosted by Continuing Studies Restoration of Natural Systems Program, 7 to 8:30 PM. See website for more info.

FALL HARVEST LUNCH
