NEWS
A wholehearted thank you and congratulations to Rita Fromholt for her hard work and passion acting as Sustainability Coordinator at the UVic Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability for over five years. Rita took the lead in GHG and climate reporting, improving sustainable transportation on campus, and engaging with students, faculty, and community members to create a more sustainable campus and community environment. We wish her all the best in her new role with the Green Party of BC. Thanks Rita, you will be missed!
This week the provincial government released a concerning video on the science of LNG, representing the gas in a manner reminiscent of a grade–school science experiment. See the video on the Vancouver Sun website. According to a report from the Pembina Institute, the government’s current trajectory for BC’s LNG industry could double BC’s GHG emissions by 2020, bringing them almost up to par with Alberta’s tar sands emissions. Given the rate at which we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels to stay within a maximum 2-degree rise in climate in order to lessen the risk of experiencing catastrophic runaway global warming, their choice to omit the climate impacts of LNG in the video negligent at best.
UVic students Peter Gibbs and Tristan Ryan were featured on CFAX radio last week discussing the vibrant Divest UVic campaign on campus that is calling on the university to withdraw its investments from the fossil fuel industry. At the UVSS AGM on Oct 16th an unprecedented amount of student support voted in favour of holding a referendum on divestment in the spring. Check out the Martlet for more details.
