How can you support efforts to stand up to Kinder Morgan in Burnaby?

Burnaby Mountain opposition

Hi PAOV,

Right now, a diverse and dedicated group of Burnaby residents are making a stand against the Texan pipeline giant Kinder Morgan in a protected area on Burnaby Mountain. Several people have been served injunction papers, which threaten to strip them of their material worth if they get in the way of Kinder Morgan’s tar sands development. They are facing allegations of trespassing in their own public park.

Like us, these concerned citizens don’t want to see their beautiful conservation area hacked up for Kinder Morgan’s tar sands pipeline plans. They care about their community and parks, about the threat of an oil spill and about the impact this project will have on climate change. But instead of engaging in a meaningful discussion with local residents, Kinder Morgan responded with bullying – and a very expensive lawsuit.

So what can you do to help?

The Wilderness Committee is organizing a field trip on Friday, November 7th to show support and bear witness at the Burnaby Mountain conservation area that is being threatened. We’ll be meeting at 12 noon in the parking lot at Burnaby Mountain Park (view map), near Horizons Restaurant at the end of Centennial Way. We will then take a solidarity walk through the park, and we’ll eventually meet up with the family-friendly activities taking place that day as part of the Burnaby Mountain Community Fest. Please join us on Friday to stand in solidarity with those who are working to defend this park and stop Kinder Morgan!

Another way you can support the cause is by donating funds to help pay for the legal fees associated with Kinder Morgan’s lawsuit. Click here to check out the crowd-funding campaign and find out how to contribute to the Burnaby residents’ legal defence fund.

Lastly, we’ll have another opportunity to speak out against Kinder Morgan’s tar sands pipeline in Burnaby next Thursday, at a rally organized by students at Simon Fraser University (SFU). I’ll be there to join students and other supporters in expressing opposition and raising awareness about the issue in the SFU community. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. next Thursday, November 13th. Click here for event details. I hope to see you there!

We’ll be watching closely as the court proceedings continue and as the situation unfolds on Burnaby Mountain. Please stay tuned for more opportunities to take action in the weeks and months to come!

Cheers,
