System Change November Call: Plans for 2015

System Change Not Climate Change news.

SCNCC November Call Monday, Nov. 10,
Plans for 2015

The Republican “victory” in the farcical US Midterm elections was not an expression of a rightward shift in US politics as much as the sigh of voter discontent. Given the shared agenda of the Democrats & Republicans, historically low approval ratings for Congress and the lack of third parties, even a Republican voter in Kansas speaking about choices for governor admitted that, "both seem kind of like leftovers you don't want to eat." The Republican majority in the Senate has many rightly worried about a renewed effort to pass the KXL Pipeline. The Obama administration will likely use Republican control as an excuse to roll over and green light the project. Our movement must rise to the challenge in such a case.

While the US electoral system has stacked the deck in favor of a corporate agenda, pro-environmental votes beat back monied campaigns to win a moratorium on fracking in Denton, TX, and defeat Chevron-backed candidates in Richmond CA. The Hawkins-Jones Green Party ticket won nearly 5% of the vote in the NY governor’s race. Howie and Brian ran on a shoestring as open socialists who supported 100% clean energy by 2030, a fracking ban and a Green New Deal for starters. These results confirm what most of us already know: below the media’s facile interpretation of the election lies a mostly unorganized sea of discontent.

Do you want to help SCNCC change that "unorganized" bit? Join us on our monthly call to discuss our plans for 2015. The time is right for a stronger anti-capitalist and ecosocialist voice in our movements. We need more activists and politicos involved with SCNCC to make that happen. Please tune in and plug in.
