How will you celebrate nature this season?

Dear PAOV,

It’s been another busy year at the Wilderness Committee – a year that leaves me celebrating many wins for nature. These wins are because of the support of people like you. Thank you!

You might be wondering why I’m celebrating. Haven’t we had a lot of bad news this year? I certainly won’t deny that.

Right now in southwest British Columbia, Texas-based company Kinder Morgan wants to build a pipeline that will pump Alberta tar sands bitumen to its tanker terminal in Burnaby, bringing hundreds of oil tankers into Burrard Inlet each year.

I don't need to tell you about the increased risk to our marine environment and climate if Kinder Morgan gets its way.

The Wilderness Committee has been working flat out to see an end to Kinder Morgan’s pipe dream, by holding town hall meetings and rallies to build grassroots and cross-border support to protect our waters and the global climate against increased tar sands exports. We've also attended court hearings, provided mapping services and held a solidarity march in support of protesters standing up to Kinder Morgan right now in a local park on Burnaby Mountain.

So why, when our wilderness areas are under attack, are we still celebrating nature? Because we’ve always been able to count on friends like you to help make victories happen.

This year, we’ve celebrated the declaration of a fourth tribal park in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, as well as the recent protection of Chitek Lake Provincial Park in Manitoba – a unique wild area that our Winnipeg office has been working to help safeguard for years.

Back in February, we had another big reason to celebrate nature when the federal government turned down Taseko Mines’ proposal for an open-pit gold and copper mine at Fish Lake, in the heart of Tsilhqot’in Nation territory. For years we have been part of this hard-fought campaign, supporting the Tsilhqot'in in their quest to preserve this beautiful wilderness area – and we won!

What’s more, the Tsilhqot'in Nation announced a new tribal park that will protect Fish Lake and several hundred thousand hectares of wilderness on BC’s Chilcotin Plateau. We'll continue working to support their wild dream, with your help, until it becomes a reality.

So you can see why this year-end has me celebrating nature! And celebrating supporters like you who work with us to protect the wilderness we value so much.

Please join me, my colleagues and Wilderness Committee supporters across Canada to defend and expand our park system, protect wild rivers and waterways and ensure that we will continue to celebrate wild nature for decades to come.
