Let’s keep pushing for a national ban on neonics!

Hi PAOV,

Yesterday bees in Ontario received some wonderful news: the provincial government announced a plan to significantly restrict the use of bee-killing neonicotinoid pesticides.

Specifically, the Ontario government pledged to work “towards a goal of 80 per cent reduction in the number of acres planted with neonicotinoid-treated corn and soybean seed by 2017,” and they laid out clear steps to achieve this goal. Click here to learn more about the Ontario government’s plan.

This is major news!

Currently, almost 100 per cent of corn seeds and 60 per cent of soybean seeds in Ontario are treated with deadly neonics – covering almost five million acres. The impact of this pesticide to bees has been devastating. In 2012 and 2013, tens of millions of bees died after nearby corn and soy fields were planted with neonic-treated seeds, and last winter honey bees in Ontario suffered a catastrophic overwintering loss of 58 percent.

Something had to change, and thankfully the Ontario government decided to take meaningful actionsteps to protect our bees and wild pollinators.

Now we need the federal government to do the same.

If you haven’t done so already, click here to sign our petition calling on the federal government to ban neonics in Canada. If you have already signed this petition, please take a minute to forward this email to three of your friends or family members.

We are calling for a complete neonic ban in Canada because although the Ontario government has taken an important first step to restrict neonics, the only way to fully protect our beleaguered bees and wild pollinators is to completely phase out neonics right across Canada.

Thanks again for standing up for our bees and wild pollinators!

Yours truly,

Gwen Barlee | Policy Director
