Time for Kinder Morgan to go home

Say No to Kinder Morgan

Hi PAOV,

If you're anything like me, you are probably just now coming to terms with the events that unfolded recently on Burnaby Mountain, in the effort to stop Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline. What we witnessed in this local conservation area in Burnaby, BC was a community backed into a corner by an aggressive, disrespectful company that has simply not been listening to them.

The polling results are clear: the majority of Burnaby residents do not want a giant new tar sands pipeline rammed through their hometown, due to the risk of climate change and oil spills. The recent re-election of the Burnaby’s mayor – whose platform included opposing the pipeline – is yet another clear indication of where folks stand on the issue. Yet, as they have continually done in the past, Kinder Morgan ignored community concerns and charged ahead with its project-related survey work.

The company may be saying now that constructing the pipeline through Burnaby Mountain is “feasible,” but I believe that the wall of opposition they met on the mountain made it clear just how difficult it will be for Kinder Morgan to ever get this pipeline built.

For me, the greatest outcome of these recent events is the simple fact that the debate around Kinder Morgan, climate change and tar sands pipelines in Canada will never be the same again. The media attention devoted to this critical issue reached a level never seen before in the five or more years we have been working to confront Kinder Morgan.

That wall of opposition has brought new folks to the campaign who may not have been engaged in the issue before, and it thoroughly thrashed any claim to a social licence that the company might have had.

The federal government has been watching these events unfold – and now is the time to make sure they know how strongly Canadians feel about stopping tar sands pipelines.

So will you have your voice heard?

We’ve created a new letter-writing tool so that you can send a powerful message to James Moore, the Minister Responsible for British Columbia: the federal government needs to drop its support of Kinder Morgan once and for all.

As the senior federal representative for BC, Minister Moore is in a position to stop this crazy project if opposition is strong enough in BC (and beyond). So please take the time to write today!

Cheers,
