PAOV,

It's hard to believe that another year is almost over.

In just a few short days we'll be ringing in 2015, which means that this is your last chance to make a tax-deductible donation to the Wilderness Committee to protect Canada's wild rivers in 2014!

Here at the Wilderness Committee, we've spent some time reflecting on the past year's successes, including:

  • A report from the California Energy Commission that excludes private run-of-river projects in BC from California’s Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), confirming that BC’s private hydropower doesn’t meet the state’s environmental standards;
  • Front page news reports resulting from our Freedom of Information (FOI) research, showing that 75 per cent of private hydro projects in BC’s South Coast region had “unsatisfactory operating procedures” and many were harming fish; and
  • The BC government’s indefinite delay in putting out a new call for power, which has drastically slowed down development of the private hydropower industry and could potentially save many wild rivers from being dammed and diverted.

All these points prove what we’ve been saying for years – that private run-of-river hydro projects in BC don’t make financial sense, that they fail to meet basic environmental standards, have a massive negative impact on BC Hydro and have significant impacts on our wild rivers, streams and fish.

As we look ahead to 2015, we know that we’ll need your help to keep up the fight and save BC’s wild rivers and streams from being industrialized for private profit.

Your tax-deductible gift of $25, $50 or $100 will go a long way to help ensure that the Wilderness Committee can continue to advocate for the protection of our threatened waterways. Donate before midnight on December 31st to ensure that you get a 2014 tax receipt.

We're excited to get to work in 2015, and we can't do it without you. Thank you for taking a stand for nature!

Wishing you all the best in the year ahead.
