Keep up the fight

Hi PAOV,

This afternoon, the BC government announced its decision to build the Site C dam on the Peace River near Fort Saint John.

Given the extensive environmental damage associated with the project, the waste of taxpayer funds and the human rights impacts to local farmers and First Nations communities, it’s hard to believe that any government could go ahead with a project like Site C – but here we are.

It has been said that this dam is the most expensive project in the province’s history. We say it’s the most expensive mistake in BC’s history.

Site C is strongly opposed by Peace Valley landowners and First Nations, as well as downstream First Nations in Alberta – all of whom have recently launched court challenges opposing the dam. Even the business community has spoken out about the Site C dam’s heavy price tag, which has drastically increased in the past week from an estimated $7.9 billion to over $8.7 billion.

Of course this decision from the BC government is extremely disappointing, but it is by no means the end of the battle to protect the beautiful Peace River Valley.

We will continue to work with our allies to support the court challenges aimed at stopping the Site C dam. It’s a crying shame it had to come to this, but we will do whatever we can to stop this dam project before it drowns British Columbia in debt and conflict.

One thing is for sure: Nothing can drown out the voices of the thousands of people standing up to protect the Peace Valley by stopping Site C.

Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks and months – and thank you for standing up to protect the Peace!
