Celebrating 35 years of wilderness preservation
Hi PAOV,
As we stand on the brink of another new year, I’ve been thinking a lot about past years.
When I first started volunteering at the Wilderness Committee back in 1985, the organization was already five years old. I joined because I was passionate about saving BC’s Stein Valley from logging – a goal that was eventually achieved when the entire Stein was formally protected in 1995.
Nowadays I am just as passionate about seeing the recently-announced Dasiqox Tribal Park, located on the Chilcotin Plateau, gain formal protection as well.
I believe that it’s important to remember how far we have come together, so we can see more clearly how far we can go in the future.
The Wilderness Committee is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and we want to share this milestone with you!
As part of the celebration, we’ll be featuring a variety of stories, photos and videos from WC history – from the decades of adventures out in the wild to the countless rallies in support of wilderness, from dedicated volunteers in action to the hardworking staff in our offices across Canada.
Through it all, there’s one thing I know for sure: we could never have made it this far without the active support of our thousands of members, supporters and volunteers from coast to coast. Thank you!
Each week throughout 2015, we’ll be posting a different photo on our website and social media channels for #ThrowbackThursday. It’s a fun way to reflect on our past successes and all the wild times we’ve had in our work to protect Canada’s threatened wilderness and wildlife.
