VICTORIA WEST
Victoria West Resilient Neighbourhood Resource Table (Update)
What do faith groups, land developers, community service providers, local schools and grassroots projects have in common in Vic West? They all care about fostering a vibrant, resilient neighbourhood. Over the past year, Building Resilient Neighbourhoods has been convening The Victoria West Resilient Neighbourhood Resource Table which is growing collaboration and idea-sharing amongst a core group of people from informal groups, business and organizations based in the neighbourhood. The Table has been working together to respond to key themes that came out of the Victoria West Resilience Snapshot including an interest in greater collaboration around common goals across the neighbourhood, and opportunities for “bridging” the geographic and socio-economic diversity of Vic West. For more information, or if you know of a group, organization or business in Vic West that would like to get involved, contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Vic West Resilient Streets
Spring is almost here – time for a “party with a purpose” with your neighbours! Once again, Building Resilient Neighbourhoods is offering 2 types of micro-grants for Resilient Streets projects in Victoria West that build resilience, improve your block or building, and strengthen connections among neighbours. “Pre-planning” grants of up to $40 to help you plan and host a get-together (like a “party with a purpose”) with people who live near you to discuss resilience and kick around ideas for what you might like to do together. Project grants of up to $200 can help your group with an actual project. The application forms are simple and short, and you can access them here.Calling all Victoria West Resilient Streets Alumnus!
As we gear up for another season supporting Resilient Streets projects, we will be sending out invitations in the next week for a fun get together in March to everyone who has participated in or led a Victoria West Resilient Streets gathering or project. This is a chance to gather with other neighbours from across Vic West to share your Resilient Streets stories and help us plan how we can spark more Resilient Streets activities this year. Laughing Allowed! — The Slapstick World of Neighbourhood Activism

This past fall, Building Resilient Neighbourhoods’ Rob Wipond and Michelle Colussi teamed up with theatre director Will Weigler and a group of citizens from Victoria West and other neighbourhoods to create and perform the comedic theatrical show, “Laughing Allowed! The Slapstick World of Neighbourhood Activism.” The idea was to playfully explore what we do and don’t like about getting involved in our local communities, and to use physical comedy as a different way of beginning discussions about some of those issues. The creation process, show and post-show discussion provided lots of fun and lots of learnings — and we’re pleased to be able to provide videos of the event thanks to Red Willow Video Productions. Click here to access them and please feel welcome to embed or download and copy any of the videos to show anywhere you like to provoke any kind of discussions — or just to provoke some laughs!
In the near future, we plan to release a small handbook for how to develop a similar kind of show in your own neighbourhood.
“The Building Resilient Neighbourhoods Project is a partnership between the Community Social Planning Council and Transition Victoria. The project has been generously supported by the Victoria Foundation, Vancouver Foundation, City of Victoria, and the District of Saanich and has been developed with the collaboration of the Centre for Community Renewal, BC Healthy Communities, and the Fraser Basin Council’s Smart Planning for Communities program.”
