Al Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe 1948

7:00 pm Tuesday March 17 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Benny Brunner and Alexandra Jansse 60 min.

It follows the events that surround the 1948 Palestinian Exodus. Based on the book The Birth of the Palestinian... Refugee Problem, 1947–1949. It is the first documentary film to examine the displacement of 750,000 Palestinians during the birth of the state of Israel. The film shifts between interviews with Palestinian refugees and the reactions of Irgun and Haganah soldiers who witnessed and participated in the events of 1948.

Area C

8:10 pm Tuesday March 17 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Ayed Nabaa 50min.

In 1995, following the Oslo Accords, Israel divided the occupied West Bank into three main areas: Areas A, B and C. This was supposed to symbolise progress towards peace. However, many Palestinians saw it as a raw deal that undermined their claim to a future state. Area C accounts for 60 percent of the West Bank. It remains in the hands of the Israeli government, despite the Oslo Accords, which called for it to be returned to the Palestinians. Is this because of land, settlements or water? The answer: All of the above.

The Great Book Robbery

7:00 pm Wednesday March 18 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Benny Brunner 57 min.

Chronicles of a cultural destruction. The story of 70,000 Palestinian books that were looted by the newly created State of Israel in 1948. The film interweaves various story lines in a structure that is dramatically compelling and emotionally unsettling. The interviews center on eyewitness accounts and cultural critiques that place the book plunder affair in a larger historical-cultural context; in the process, new light is shed on the Palestinian tragedy of 1948 and the moralistic-heroic Israeli narrative of the 1948 war is being deconstructed.

Gaza Lives On

8:10 pm Wednesday March 18 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Ashraf al-Mashharawy 50 min.

A film about hope in times of hardship and despair, as the people of Gaza demonstrate their remarkable resilience under occupation and years of an unrelenting Israeli siege.

Naji al-Ali

7:00 pm Thursday March 19 - 2994 Douglas

By: Kasim Abid 53 min.

Creator of the iconic Palestine-solidarity figure of Handala, the barefoot ten-year-old refugee boy who always has his back to us with hands folded, sometimes carrying a key, Naji al-Ali is still the most popular cartoon artist in the Arab world, loved for his defense of the ordinary people, and for his criticism of repression and despotism. In spite of strict censorship and widespread illiteracy in the Arab world, the work of Naji al-Ali achieved remarkable success. His unrelenting cartoons exposed the brutality of the Israeli army and the hypocrisy of the PLO, earning him many powerful enemies. Unfortunately, this led to his early demise. Join us in remembering Naji al-Ali and his work.

Staying Human

8:10 pm Thursday March 19 - 2994 Douglas

By: Al Jazera 50 min.

This film follows Italian human rights activist Vittorio Arrigoni as he campaigns for the fishermen of Gaza. Arrigoni was a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using non-violent methods. In the film he relates his experience of Israel’s war on Gaza and explains why he chose to visit and live in Gaza in the first place.

Gaza We Are Coming - with a presentation by Omar Mansour

1:00 pm Friday March 20 - Fisher 100 at Camosun College Lansdowne Campus

By: Yorgos Avgeropoulos & Yiannis Karipidis 50 min

In 1967, when Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and West Bank, ships from the Mediterranean ceased sailing to Gaza’s ports. In 2006, Israel made things worse, imposing a brutal land, aerial and naval blockade on Gaza. But in 2008, 44 activists from 17 different countries created an unforgettable moment in the history of Palestine. They sailed from Greece to Gaza breaking the Israeli naval siege on the territory for the first time in forty years. This film chronicles their daring act of resistance.

Budrus

7:00 pm Friday March 20 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Julia Bacha 82 min.

Ayed Morrar took leave of his comfortable job at the Palestinian Authority upon hearing that the Israeli government was planning to build a separation barrier through Budrus, his small agricultural village. He convened a town-hall meeting, invited Israeli civilians, and formed a movement whose motto, “We Can Do It,” resonates with community organizers worldwide. To everyone’s surprise, Ayed became the leader of the first unarmed movement to successfully protect and even expand Palestinian territory--an accomplishment made possible in large part by Ayed’s 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, who launched a women’s contingent that quickly moved to the front lines. This film chronicles their daring act of resistance.

Beyond The Walls

8:30 pm Friday March 20 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Ahmad Adnan al-Ramhy 50min.

Since the six-day war in 1967, Israel has imprisoned more than 700,000 Arabs, mostly for political crimes. The vast majority of these prisoners are Palestinian. Some died in detention while others remain in jail. Over the years, thousands have been freed. This film tells us some of their stories.

Gaza Tunnels

7:00 pm Saturday March 21 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Mohamed Harb 26 min.

An inside look at the tunnels under Gaza and the men who risk their lives to bring in essential supplies.

Salt Of This Sea

7:30 pm Saturday March 21 - 1923 Fernwood

By: Annemarie Jacir (109mins)

Soraya, 28, born and raised in Brooklyn, decides to return to live in Palestine, the country her family was exiled from in 1948. On arriving in Ramallah, Soraya tries to recover her grandparent’s money, frozen in an account in Jaffa, but is refused by the bank. She meets Emad, a young Palestinian whose ambition, contrary to hers, is to leave Palestine forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives, Soraya and Emad know in order to be free, they must take things into their own hands, even it means breaking the law. In this quest for life, we follow their trail through remains of a lost Palestine.
