Join Canadians marching for the climate this Saturday

Act on Climate Vancouver

Hi PAOV,

The days are longer, the sun is warmer and Canada’s federal government is still failing us on climate change. Sound like the time for a good old-fashioned climate rally to you?

All of that climate inaction at the federal level has led to a meeting of the premiers of the provinces and territories in Quebec City on April 14th, with one topic on the agenda: climate change. Our allies to the east have organized the awesome Act on Climate March for this Saturday, April 11th to urge Canada’s premiers to take climate action now.

This is a big country, and for many of us it just isn’t possible to make it to Quebec. That’s why we are asking you to join us at a solidarity event taking place in downtown Vancouver, where we’ll make sure our voices are heard loud and clear.

The need to show solidarity with our eastern counterparts has never been more important. With the Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline stuck in the mud, and major push-back on Kinder Morgan’s attempts to ram their own pipe through Burnaby, the tar sands industry is feeling the pressure and seeking new ways to expand.

The latest desperate attempt to ensure Big Oil’s survival is TransCanada’s proposed Energy East pipeline, slated to snake its way across the prairies all the way to New Brunswick. It has been inspiring to see the opposition so powerfully displayed here in BC replicated by the brave activists of Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario. This Saturday, we have a chance to stand together as one great wall of opposition.

Here are the details:

The fact that BC's Premier is travelling to this meeting is a reason to hope, as many provinces and territories seem prepared to fill the climate void left by the government of Canada.

BC gave up its right to conduct its own comprehensive environmental reviews of big national fossil fuel projects like Kinder Morgan’s pipeline, and our Premier could reclaim that power at any time. That’s why we set up this letter-writing tool demanding that BC pull out of its arrangement with the federal government, and start made-in-BC pipeline reviews.
