Independent journalism equals a better democracy

We share The Tyee's campaign with you today because we believe good journalism and democracy go hand in hand. The next federal election is coming up fast, and we need more allies in the media if we're going to get proportional representation on the public agenda.

In the past, The Tyee has been especially supportive of democratic accountability, solutions, and renewal. In the upcoming high-stakes federal election, we need more independent voices asking hard questions of our leaders.

During the last election, a near-total majority of Canada’s major newspapers directly endorsed the Conservatives and other political candidates. The Tyee doesn’t endorse: we need media that stands up for democracy, not political parties.

We all deserve solid, in-depth reporting about our government’s track record, delivered by media who are answerable first and foremost to readers. That’s why The Tyee, a Canadian independent, online newsmagazine, is assembling an amazing election reporting team. And they are asking for your help.

The Tyee is aiming to raise $75,000 to report on the upcoming federal election. The deadline is mere hours away. Can you help them get there? Contribute now at https://support.thetyee.ca/?campaign=fairvote

Instead of seeking big corporate investors, they are asking for small contributions – $10, $25, $50 – from a wide variety of Canadians who have the public interest at heart.

What will they cover? Well, that’s partly up to you.

When you give, you get to vote on which of the broad issue areas they regularly cover matters most to you. If Fair Vote Canada supporters back The Tyee's election reporting campaign in large numbers, and vote for ‘Government Accountability’ when we give, we will send a strong signal that readers are hungry for attention to issues like electoral reform.

So, make sure to vote for "Government Accountability" as your news priority when you sign up: https://support.thetyee.ca/?campaign=fairvote

We wouldn’t be sending you this email if we didn’t back The Tyee’s journalism. For over eleven years, they have been doing feisty, investigative reporting, and their stories are regularly cited by policymakers. They’ve also won several major journalism awards, and kudos from notable Canadians such as Margaret Atwood and Naomi Klein.

Join us in shifting the balance in Canada’s media.
