New designs, materials and construction techniques make large and tall wood buildings practical, safe and economical. Peter Moonen of Wood-Works BC! will show how heavy wood construction
- encourages sustainable forestry by creating demand for long-lasting wood products,
- stores harvested forest carbon for long periods of time,
- reduces carbon emissions from concrete and steel, and
- is safe in fires and earthquakes
The presentation will show how timber framing can be used in buildings up to 30 storeys high, using cross laminated timber and laminated strand panels as structural members. Heat-trapping greenhouse gases are produced during the production of concrete and steel, while the use of wood in construction can lock carbon up for decades.
Peter Moonen is the Municipal Affairs & National Sustainability Manager with Wood Works BC! and the Canadian Wood Council. He works to assist designers and builders in understanding how to use wood to enhance environmental performance and reduce the ecological footprint of buildings. He regularly presents on achieving greater sustainability to various local, Canadian and international groups.
Peter is also a Canadian representative at the U.N. Timber Committee and reviewer specializing in wood and the green economy for the Forest Products Annual Market Review published by the United Nations Timber and Forestry section with special emphasis on the role of wood in the green economy, including green design. In addition to a degree in Marine Biology and Zoology, he studied forestry at the University if British Columbia and Journalism and Public Affairs in Alberta.
