Call for a Poverty Reduction Plan:
from Michelle Mungall:
This Spring, I have some great news to share. To celebrate the end to the child support claw back, we’ve put together a video that shares the story of our hard work to make this happen. Watch the video here.
A year ago, I began bringing the stories of single parent families impacted by the child support clawback to the Legislature. Along with many non-profits, my New Democrat Caucus colleagues and families, I asked Premier Christy Clark to end the twelve year policy of clawing back children’s child support simply because their parents received income supports like Disability. We were a powerful force.
Less than a year later, we were successful. On February... 18 in the release of Budget 2015/16, the Provincial Government announced that the child support clawback would come to a complete end on September 1 of this year. I’ve had the opportunity to talk with many families about what this will mean for them and the more than 3200 families and close to 6000 kids in this situation each year. In short, what they told me was food on the table, school supplies in hand and having the basics their kids need to learn and meet their potential.
Going forward, I will continue to work in the Legislature and around the province for social justice. In a few weeks, I will introduce legislation for a poverty reduction plan for the third time. I hope that you will send Premier Christy Clark This email address is being protected from spambots. Margaret Mead once said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Ending the child support clawback is a great example of how by working together, we can reduce poverty experienced by children and their families.
Warm Regards,
Michelle
