Monsanto and its allies are suing the tiny, rural U.S. state of Vermont to block the labeling of GMO foods. A judge just rejected their request for a preliminary injunction -- meaning the case will now go to trial and Vermont's legal costs will likely skyrocket. When the tiny, rural U.S. state of Vermont passed a law requiring genetically engineered foods to be labeled, Monsanto and its allies sued to block it.
Facing an army of lawyers and a potential multimillion-dollar lawsuit, many people thought Vermont might simply back down.
But Vermont fought back -- and with the help of a generous donation from SumOfUs members, Vermont is winning.
A judge just rejected a request to block the law from going into effect while the lawsuit goes forward. This is great news--but also means that the lawsuit will likely go to trial, and Vermont's legal costs could skyrocket.

Monsanto and its allies will do anything to keep consumers in the dark about genetically engineered foods, and they have an army of lawyers. They know that if consumers have the facts, many will stick to natural, organic choices instead.
And since Vermont is the first U.S. state to pass a law requiring GMO labeling, it's a precedent that dozens of states could soon follow. That's why Monsanto is fighting so hard to kill GMO labeling in Vermont.
If we can win here, it’ll be a huge step toward the goal of GMO labeling, not just in the U.S. but worldwide -- making sure consumers know what they are eating.
But first we need to win this lawsuit, and that's going to be a costly fight. Vermont is being sued by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, a trade group of which Monsanto is a core member. With the association's army of lawyers and virtually unlimited resources, a small, rural state like Vermont is massively outgunned.
