ESQUIMALT and VICTORIA WEST
Resilient Streets Micro Grants - Esquimalt and Vic West - Help spread the word and the money! DEADLINE: June 30, 2015Our spring 2015 Resilient Streets micro grant programs are up and running in Esquimalt and Vic West. Our goal is to get 10 new Resilient Streets signed up and started and we’ll need your help to do it. We’re offering “pre-planning” grants of up to $40 to help you plan and host a get-together with people who live near you to kick around ideas for what you might like to do together. Think of it as a “party with a purpose”. And we are offering grants of up to $200 to help your group get an actual project up and running. It is the most straightforward application process ever – so get going! And be sure to tell your friends too. Applications and lots of great ideas can be found online at resilientneighbourhoods.ca. Applications are accepted until June 30th.
Save the Date: Monday, June 15, 2015 | Strengthening Local Economies Workshop
The Building Resilient Neighbourhood team is hosting a workshop full of ideas for how to strengthen local economies from 1-4 pm on June 15th at the Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt (in The Crow's Nest). We are busy gathering up successful projects and examples linked to two main themes: strengthening the environment for local, small businesses and downtown revitalization. We will be sharing lessons about what other places have done and also how they have done it including the nature of planning, engagement, collaboration and action that stands out in other "resilient" places.
VICTORIA WEST
Vic West Street Fest | June 7, 2015 Harbour Road will be closed to vehicles and everyone is invited to the first-ever “Vic West Street Fest.” It’s a free, family-friendly, outdoor public festival of food, games, art, entertainment, sharing and learning that will take place on and around Harbour Road on Sunday, June 7th, 2015, from 10am to 4pm. The whole area will be transformed with local live music, food trucks, street hockey, street chalk art, and tours of Point Hope Shipyard. The Vic West Street Fest is being hosted by the Vic West Resilient Neighbourhood Resource Table, a volunteer collaboration of non-profit organizations, citizens and businesses based in Vic West which was founded with the help of the Building Resilient Neighbourhoods project.

Celebrating Vic West Street Champions
On March 26th we had the very good fortune to host dinner for some of our Vic West Resilient Streets Champions at the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club. What a wonderful treat for us to reconnect with so many enthusiastic community-buildings and to learn from them how we can continue to work together to keep building the program. Thank you once again to all of our Street Champions and to everyone who continues to work with them. If you live in Vic West or Esquimalt, you can become a Resilient Street Champion too by coming up with a plan to host a small event with some neighbours, filling out our micro-grant application, and then having some fun getting together with your neighbours. Sounds pretty good, eh!?Vic West Fest 2015 – Thank you!
Members of the Resilient Neighbourhood Team hosted a booth at Vic West Fest on May 9th. We had a wonderful time getting to meet so many people and sharing all kinds of stories and ideas such as sharing with one another, creating community in residential buildings, and neighbourhood emergency preparedness. Thank you to the Victoria West Community Association for organizing the day and to everyone who took a bit of time to make a party hat for themselves at our craft table.

“The Building Resilient Neighbourhoods Project is a partnership between the Community Social Planning Council and Transition Victoria. The project has been generously supported by the Victoria Foundation, Vancouver Foundation, City of Victoria, and the District of Saanich and has been developed with the collaboration of the Centre for Community Renewal, BC Healthy Communities, and the Fraser Basin Council’s Smart Planning for Communities program.”
