STREET DEATHS ARE PREVENTABLE DEATHS
On June 16 – 19, join us for a week of education and action to end poverty-related deaths in BC.
Between 2006 and 2013, at least 281 people have died on the
streets in British Columbia. Due to under-reporting, that number is likely much
much higher.
Victoria has the highest number of street deaths per capita in BC. In a four
month period, 30 people died on the streets of this city.
These deaths are preventable. Not only are there tangible causes, but viable
solutions. We need adequate health services, social housing, and harm reduction
services. We need all levels of government to commit to eliminating poverty and
preventing street deaths. See below for event info - see you there!

year’s event, with the theme Building Community, Breaking down
Barriers, marks the 3rd annual World Refugee Day
celebrations in Victoria, and will host interactive stations, information
booths, music, food to purchase, as well as a children’s area.
Yummy Truck will be
providing delicious food for purchase.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BC ELDERS GATHERING JULY 6-9
BC Elders Gathering needs volunteers for this very large event. Anyone including members of the general public is invited to volunteer assisting with Elders support, workshops, setup, registration and other roles.
This gathering is hosted by the Tsawout First Nation Elders will be held July 6-9 at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Teaching students of refugee and trauma backgrounds – What I’ve learned and helpful resources
The ELL –LSA JUNE MEETING at Spectrum Library on June 22 @ 3:45 pm with an amazing speaker, crafted cookies from “Sugar Mama” & Coffee and Tea.
Kris will cover the background of the many diverse students entering our districts from refugee and trauma backgrounds. He will share his experience about students coming from these backgrounds, what the current research is saying about them and the patterns that he has experienced. Chris will share his insights, strategies and helpful tips with plenty of time for questions, sharing experiences, and story telling.
Kris Hull was the co-creator and teacher of the ELL Transitions Program at Queen Elizabeth Secondary from 2006-2010, an all-year program for new immigrant students to help them settle into Canada and learn Basic English skills. He is now the co-creator and teacher of the ELL Bridge Program at the Surrey School District ELL Welcome Centre for new immigrants aged 13-19 that comes from trauma and refugee backgrounds. The program focuses on Basic English, community exposure and Canadian culture. Students are there for approximately 2 months, assessed and transitioned into their high school with the support of a counselor, two psychologists, settlement and multicultural workers.
