Will you send a message of hope?

One year ago this week, something remarkable happened.
In June of 2014, our brothers and sisters in the Presbyterian Church made a brave choice: they voted at their General Assembly to divest the church from companies that profit from Israel’s illegal occupation.
Next week, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ is meeting in Cleveland, and the General Convention of the Episcopal Church is convening in Salt Lake City. While they’re there, they’ll be voting whether to do the same: aligning their values with their investments by divesting from the occupation.
JVP activists and organizers will be in Cleveland and Salt Lake City, making the Jewish case for divestment. But they need your support, too. We want to send a strong message of hope and action to our partners in the UCC and Episcopal Church. We want to show them that thousands of people of faith and people of conscience stand with them.
Last year, when we at JVP were deciding whether to endorse the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, I was reminded of a quote I love by the writer and activist Grace Paley:
“The only recognizable feature of hope is action.”
That’s what you do, as a JVP supporter: you take action. And that’s what we need to do now, to move forward our grassroots movement for divestment. Over 3,500 people have already joined our Interfaith Network for Justice in Palestine, but we think we can get to 6,000 before the church conferences meet next week. Can you help?
Keep hope alive by taking action -- join the Interfaith Network for Justice in Palestine.
It doesn’t matter whether there’s a seat with your name on it at your local synagogue, or whether you’ve never set foot in a mosque. All that matters is that you’re willing to declare that the time for sitting silently whilst Israel commits human rights violations is over. The time for speaking out is now.
And if not now, when?
Onward,
Alissa
