Hi PAOV,
It’s the end of another beautiful summer, and what busy summer it’s been here at the Wilderness Committee!
From Fanny Bay to the Walbran Valley to the waters of the Salish Sea, we’ve been working with communities to fight developments that threaten the environment and stand up for a brighter, more responsible future.
Join us at our Volunteer Action Night on Wednesday, August 26th for a re-cap of this busy season, and what the next steps are for our campaigns!
Since the spring, we’ve celebrated the withdrawal of the risky Raven Coal Mine application, participated in the solar-powered Salish Sea Tour and had another fantastic season of trail building with the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation in Clayoquot Sound.
But the issue that has dominated our attention these past few months is the campaign to save the Walbran Valley – one of the most important intact old-growth coastal temperate rainforests on the coast!
As soon as we found out about possible logging in the area, we sprang into action to raise public awareness of this critical threat. We organized rallies and town hall meetings, and gathered over 2,500 letters urging the BC Minister of Forests to reject logging permits for the Walbran.
So far, hundreds of new activists have been mobilized, the ancient forest movement has been re-energized and most importantly, no logging permits have been issued to date.
None of this could have been done without the hard work and dedication of Wilderness Committee supporters and volunteers, and that’s why your help is so important to us.
The fall is going to be even busier, so please join us on Wednesday to find out about upcoming volunteer opportunities and learn what’s in store for this critical campaign!
We host our regular Volunteer Action Nights on the last Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 7:00pm at our Victoria office, which is located at #202, 3 Fan Tan Alley (view map).
As always, refreshments will be served.
I hope to see you next week!
