Help create a national park in BC’s South Okanagan Similkameen

Dear PAOV,

What does it feel like to create a national park?

It feels really good.

And right now you have the opportunity to feel great by helping to create a national park in the endangered South Okanagan Similkameen region of British Columbia.

This area, full of rolling grasslands, sagebrush and sweetly scented ponderosa pine, is one of the most endangered ecosystems in all of Canada. Badgers, bobolinks, big horn sheep, rattlesnakes and sage thrashers all call this arid landscape home, and one-third of BC’s species at risk can be found here.

Three weeks ago something wonderful happened. The BC government announced a new conservation framework proposal for the South Okanagan Similkameen and, most importantly, this proposal considers national park protection!

The good news doesn’t stop there.

The federal government wants to establish a national park to represent the Interior Dry Plateau Natural Region, and local support is strong and growing with recent polls showing over 3:1 support in favour of establishing a park. The Okanagan Nation Alliance, the local First Nations government that represents 8 member communities, released their own study deeming the national park feasible and recommending that national park planning should move forward.

Now we need to make all of this good will a reality - and this is where you come in.

The BC government is asking for public feedback on their proposal until October 12, 2015.

The Wilderness Committee and our members have worked on this campaign for over 10 years – and now our hard work is paying off. Thanks so much for taking the time to make sure one of the most endangered ecosystems in Canada gets the protection it deserves.

For the wild,
