Global Talk with Dr. Robert Dover

What: The legislative borders of urban health policies: the impact of differentiated health regimens

The Borders in Globalization project and The Centre for Global Studies co-host a special Global Talk next week with Dr. Robert Dover, an associate professor of anthropology at the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. His recent research has focused on the protected right to health, and the social, legislative, economic and political impediments that interfere with that right, especially in vulnerable urban and rural populations in Colombia. He has also participated in health-related projects in Cape Town, South Africa, regarding urban space and health, and the social determinants of obesity.

Tea, coffee, and light snacks will be served.

Dignity for All - Canada’s National Anti-Poverty Plan

Please join Citizens for Public Justice and Canada Without Poverty for a free public workshop to learn about their national anti-poverty campaign Dignity for All.

Debbie Hubbard will share stories and experiences from her recent time in East Jerusalem as a human rights observer with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). EAPPI is a program co-ordinated by the World Council of Churches.





Robert Fisk to speak on ISIS in Victoria, BC

In one week, on Sunday, Sept. 20th, CJPME will be hosting veteran Middle East journalist and author Robert Fisk in Victoria. We cordially invite you to hear this articulate and insightful scholar and journalist.

Fisk’s lecture will focus on how the Syrian civil war – especially the rise of the so-called “Islamic State” – has destabilized the existing order in the Middle East. Fisk’s talk is entitled: ‘Goodbye, Mr. Sykes! Adieu, M. Picot!’ How the ISIS ‘caliphate’ frightens the Middle East – and us.

More about Robert Fisk:

Based in Beirut since 1976, Dr. Fisk has been the Middle East correspondent for the British newspaper The Independent since 1988. He is the author of five books, including the seminal tome The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East (2005), Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War (1990) and The Age of the Warrior: Selected Writings (2008). He is a highly respected veteran journalist because of his direct and uncompromising reporting and analysis.

Fisk's address will be followed by a Q&A period.
