Dear Friends of SJS,
Hoping that all of you have some special people to share the upcoming holiday with in whatever way you can.
There several events next week that remind us that many in our communities still struggle to find ways to share holidays with their families and friends. Other events encourage us to find other ways to make the changes necessary:

SUPPORT REGIONAL HOUSING FIRST INITIATIVE
Wednesday, October 14, 1 PM

Capital Regional District office, 625 Fisgard, Lekwungen Territories

Come show the Capital Regional Hospital District that you support the Regional Housing First Strategy!

This initiative proposes to make significant progress on homelessness by building 367 units of supported housing by 2018.

Over the past 25 years Canada's population increased by 30% while annual national investment in housing decreased by over 46%. Rather than sit around waiting for the federal government to live... up to its responsibility to ensure housing for all, the proposal -- co-drafted by the CRHD Chair and Victoria mayor and councillors -- suggests taking action now through borrowing funds to be serviced by a regional levy of ~$11 per household.

The CRHD is discussing the proposal on October 14 and needs to hear that homelessness is an important issue to people across the Capital Regional District, and that the community supports this proposal as a step in the right direction.

We will welcome CRHD directors to the meeting by rallying outside the building, and then going into the meeting to provide a visible show of support. Our hope is that there will be opportunities for community members to speak to the CHRD directors to encourage them to vote for the proposal. People who want to speak to the CRHD about the initiative can do so by registering at https://www.crd.bc.ca/about/how-we-are-governed/addressing-the-board/addressing-the-crd-board-committees
