Canada’s public health care landscape changed this week.

Together we sent a clear message on October 19th: we want federal leadership for better health care. Voters in 32 of B.C.’s 42 ridings elected candidates from parties that included big plans for improving public health care in their platforms, and many other ridings were close races.[1]

Now we need to push our new government to follow through on those commitments.

Can you send an email to Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau urging him and his party to act on their campaign promises?

Things are moving fast. Trudeau has promised to meet with the provinces to negotiate a major new health agreement that will greatly influence the direction of Canadian public health care in the coming years.[2]

That means the new federal government has some big decisions to make before meeting with the premiers.

That’s where we come in. If we can hold Trudeau to his election promises and urge him to commit to leading on much-needed change, we can make Canadian public health care work better for all of us.

There is a lot we need to fix -- it’s hard for many of us to get a family doctor, 1 in 10 Canadians can't afford their medications, and many seniors end up in hospital because they can't get the care they need at home.

After a decade of neglect by the Conservative government, our new government will have to work hard to set Canadian public health care on the right course

The Liberal party made important health care commitments on the campaign trail, but so far many of their plans fall short of the bold leadership that is needed to make deep and lasting improvements to Canadian health care.[3]

While improving home care and affordability of prescription drugs are key, we need robust solutions like a coordinated National Seniors Care Strategy and a National Drug Plan.

This was a long election period and I’m grateful to have worked alongside you and many other passionate people to put improving health care on the federal parties’ agendas.

Together we knocked on thousands of doors to talk with neighbours about making health care better. We shared our election guide with tens of thousands of voters to help them make their choice on October 19th. We made a lasting difference.

With the federal election over, the BC Health Coalition will continue to push all levels of government to improve our public health system so that it serves everyone better.

Making sure Canada's next government prioritizes health care is an important next step.
