University Scientist Unveils Fifteen Years of Ancient Forest Canopy Research

UVic entomologist, Neville Winchester has climbed over two thousand ancient trees in the coastal rainforest of Vancouver island, looking for organisms that inhabit "islands in the sky", the specialized ecological spaces, hundreds of feet up, above the forest floor.

On January 29th, at 6:30 pm, UVic Student Union Building, Upper Lounge, Dr. Winchester, will publicly share findings of fifteen years of ground-breaking biological research and samplings of organisms from the unique environment of the ancient temperate rainforest canopy, which he and a team of graduate students at UVic collected and identified in the Walbran valley and other remnant old-growth forests, in the most extensive research ever done to understand the complexity and biodiversity of these threatened ecosystems.

This research unveiled the existence of hundreds of species of invertebrates never before identified by science and found nowhere else on earth. Dr. Winchester's research provides the scientific basis confirming the urgency for a legislated end to the continued resource liquidation of ancient forest ecosystems in British Columbia, especially in regions like South Vancouver island, where all but roughly 5 % of the last low-elevation primary forests have been logged and converted into biologically- degraded tree plantations.

The event is sponsored by Friends of Carmanah/Walbran, UVic Environmental Studies Students' Association and the UVic Biology Undergraduate Society.

Admission by donation with all proceeds to further the FOCW campaign to protect the Central Walbran Ancient Forest and support the vision of the Carmanah/Walbran Rainforest Global Heritage Trail.
